Frederick Knott’s intense and darkly gripping thriller, Dial M for Murder, famously filmed by Alfred Hitchcock, is now on a UK tour starring Christopher Timothy (All Creatures Great and Small) as Inspector Hubbard.
Tony is convinced his wife is having an affair. We watch mesmerised at Tony’s precision in planning what must surely be the perfect murder… until it falters in the most unexpected way. Claustrophobic and frightening, Lucy Bailey’s exciting new production reclaims this brilliant and erotic tale of betrayal, passion and ultimately, murder.Chris Davey's lighting plan and the clever sound background devised by Mic Pool tighten our mental screws. Philip d'Orleans' staging of the prolonged second act struggle almost – but never quite – tips the audience over into nervous laughter.
This gripping tale of passion, betrayal and murder.
The result is an elegance that belies the brutal nature of the plot; a contrasting light and darkness of which Hitchcock would have whole-heartedly approved.
Its brisk and enthralling second half raises the tension to fever-pitch and sends its audience home not only thrilled, but thoroughly impressed and entertained.
The show closes on a perfectly judged note, one that sums up just how brilliant Dial M For Murder could be with just a little tightening up here and there. As it is, the production shows how a sharp treatment and some excellent performances can elevate a fairly mundane thriller into a great night out.
This is a smartly-dressed, sprightly production that keeps the audience riveted until the final big reveal.
The production promises much and does not disappoint: it is a class act from start to finish, be prepared to be thrilled and chilled in equal measure.
Dial M for Murder is a brilliantly executed thriller, influenced by film noir that does not disappoint!
