Avenue Q is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the story of a recent college graduate named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. There, he meets Kate (the girl next door), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (the internet sexpert), Lucy the Slut and other colourful types who help Princeton finally discover his true purpose in life.
This is a show and a company that it is impossible not to fall in love with.
Does Avenue Q still pack the same punch? Maybe not. But it is a very funny show with a bevy of brilliant songs and with a few more performances to settle themselves in, this cast will probably get used to the standing ovation they received last night.
A musical which manages to be as funny as it is insightful, with engaging characters, brilliant performances, fine musicianship and excellent staging, Sell A Door’s production can’t be faulted. If you’ve never seen it, go. If you’ve already been to Avenue Q, go again. Like me, you may want to move in.
Anyone searching for something creative and humorous would be hard pressed to find a better evening than one at The King’s Theatre for Avenue Q.
A hilarious show with a bevy of brilliant songs.
Without the various contemporary issues – racism, homosexuality, poverty – keeping the narrative relevant to modern audiences, what’s left is a show that’s no longer as edgy and unique as it once was, and a style of storytelling that’s beginning to show its age.
The wit is glorious, the songs are great but the final cheesy acceptance of the world as it is is hard to take from a team with such a sharp insight into what’s gone wrong in our society and what we should be striving to put right.
