As three generations of the same family soak up the last of the sun’s rays in their back garden, beers in hand, the underlying tensions between the three are brought to boiling point thanks to revelations long buried, whilst also trying to stop the cat from murdering more defenceless birds.
In this tale of familial ties, Matthew Trevannion casts a darkly humorous eye over the changing fortunes of people trying to unmoor themselves from their past.
Dark humour should have many shades of nuance, but there is black and blue here and little else. A lack of tenderness and the often detached nature of Leviathan's script means a tendency towards overwhelming bleakness, but there are a few nice touches to be unearthed, nonetheless, and a great cast who make the most of Trevannion's solid script.
What’s striking, though, is the ferocious quality of Trevannion’s writing, veering from sharp comic dialogue to exquisite psychological observation.
Lunchtime theatre returns to the Traverse this week, with a terrible, lyrical roar.
A grim, gutsy tale.
At times the production feels slightly clunky with transitions that are awkward but the energy projected stings with unexpected power through three faultless performers in this brave production that presents both a heartfelt yet callous fragment of life that echoes the past and hope for the potential future.
