Titus Andronicus

Rome, a restaurant. Read more …

Titus Andronicus returns to Rome from fighting the war – limping, exhausted, but victorious (for now). His soldiers swap their army uniforms for those of the kitchen, and the work begins to re-open for business.

Titus runs the restaurant with regimental precision. Rome is famous for it. But the politics back home haven’t gone away, and into the mix Titus has brought back a trophy of war – Tamora, the enemy leader.

The tables are set...

TITUS ANDRONICUS is infamous as Shakespeare’s bloodiest tragedy – and is directed and designed for the Rep by Stewart Laing, one of Scotland’s most exciting theatre artists.

The critical consensus

Provocative and challenging.

Joy Watters, Across the Arts, 14/04/2015

A breathtaking 21st-century take on one of the most difficult plays in the Shakespeare canon, and a reflection on violence that finally –through the very food we eat – implicates us all.

****(*)Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman, 13/04/2015

Sharp to the taste and tough to digest.

****(*)Mark Fisher, The Guardian, 13/04/2015

In the title role, George Anton thunders with wounded pride as a largely young cast rage with fury as the body-count rises in a brilliantly brutal display.

****(*)Neil Cooper, Coffee-Table Notes, 13/04/2015

Immersive and entertaining, the Rep’s Titus Andronicus is loud, brash, and sometimes quite literally in your face, and is all the better for it.

*****Karl Henry, TVBomb, 13/04/2015

Though the inexperience of some of the cast shows at times, on the whole the ensemble does a fine job of navigating the mix of black humour and Grand Guignol horror.

****(*)Allan Radcliffe, 16/04/2015
