All My Sons

All My Sons

Set just after the Second World War in the backyard of Joe and Kate Keller, this gripping and passionate drama ranks as one of the classics of our time. Read more …

The Kellers try to keep alive the memory of their son Larry, who disappeared in the war, by the planting of a tree in his honour. But Larry’s disappearance is not the only part of the family’s past that they can’t put behind them. Not everybody has forgotten the court case that put Joe’s partner in jail or the cracked engine heads Joe’s factory produced, which caused the deaths of twenty-one pilots.

Following a stormy night when Larry’s tree is blown down, the Kellers are threatened by a series of events that could destroy the very foundations of their lives.

The critical consensus

Director Michael Emans’s production fails to ignite the passion of Arthur Miller’s postwar classic.

If slow initially, a number of key dialogues racked up the tension and intensity, and plaudits for this should mainly go to Robert Jack, as Chris, whose muscular, emotive performance highlighted the main issues, and Trudie Goodwin as Kate, Joe’s wife, who managed to combine both pathos and directness.

By the time we get to a funereally played last act, the tension is palpable to all.

If this is the kind of production where individual performances have to find their own way, rather than being swept along by the production’s own purpose and dynamic, there’s still plenty to enjoy in this earnest and heartfelt staging of one of the greatest plays of the 20th century.

In snatches the production was a reminder of the telling dialogue that underpins the drama, but this powerful (and germane) play requires far greater urgency and variety.

Although not without its faults, the production has stayed true to the original text and made the piece available to a whole new generation on its tour.

Rapture Theatre’s production of All My Sons is a sensitively produced, thought provoking reminder of the imperfection of humanity – well worth a night out at the theatre.
