Witches, The--Dundee Rep

Witches really are detestable creatures.  Read more …

They disguise themselves as lovely ladies, when secretly they want to squish and squelch all the wretched children they despise. They don’t ride around on broomsticks; they don’t even wear black cloaks and hats.

Luckily one boy and his grandmother know how to recognise these vile creatures, but can they get rid of them for good?

Join our young hero as he discovers the real truth about real witches.

This is the story of courage in the face of a fiendish plan hatched by the Grand High Witch and the most mischievous gathering of witches ever assembled.

The critical consensus

If the cheery songs feel a little off-message from Dahl’s dark vision of the world, they are at least delivered with huge amounts of energy.

The children of Dundee leave knowing their English counterparts are safe from the clutches of the witches, whether they can share in the feel-good factor is another matter.

Joy Watters, Across the Arts, 08/12/2015

What’s undeniable about Jemima Levick’s production is that the story is beautifully presented, in a big, good-looking staging.

At its best Dahl’s absurdist, somewhat menacing sensibility is a recipe for dark theatrical magic.

The Rep’s talented ensemble, which is completed by two charming mice puppets, carry off Dahl’s story with admirable aplomb.

Mark Brown, Scottish Stage, 07/12/2015
