Heartbeat

Heartbeat

For the first time ever ITV’s popular Sunday evening 60s police drama, HEARTBEAT, comes to the stage starring members of the TV cast. HEARTBEAT ran for 18 years from 1992 to 2010 with audiences regularly exceeding 10 million viewers and was constantly in the top five TV programmes across all the channels. Now it comes to the stage in this touring production which, with use of video footage and a clever set, recreates the atmosphere of the 1960s rural Yorkshire settings. Come and see David Stockwell, Gina Ward, PC Geoff Younger and a number of other of the most popular characters in a two hour live stage production with a brand-new script.

The critical consensus

It is a sorry state of affairs when a stuffed dog garners the biggest reaction of the evening. Loyal fans may be pleased to see these much-loved characters resurrected for the stage, but the script doesn’t do this TV classic any justice. Stay at home and watch the re-runs instead.

Heartbeat has some interesting ideas which have been poorly executed. It seems the writers are relying on nostalgia to get the audience in and this comes across as a very lazy production.

Natalie O'Donoghue, Broadway World, 28/06/2016

If anyone fancies a glimpse of what some imaginary little Britain should remain like forever, they could do worse than take a look at this touring stage version of the phenomenally successful Sunday night TV cop show based on Nicholas Rhea's Constable series of novels.

The plot was as thin as a Nigel Farage promise and almost as unbelievable.

Heartbeat is exceptionally done, but a few areas drag or take away the mood of the play.
