This isn’t a clever, groundbreaking or hugely inspiring production, in fact it’s severely flawed, yet it remains highly entertaining – it just wants you to have the time of your life and escape reality for a few hours. So, go shake your maracas.
When Dirty Dancing works, it soars – superb choreography combined with an unforgettable soundtrack. When it slumps, it slumps into the doldrums. Long periods of padding, draw out both acts, but when it finds familiar footing it doesn’t miss a beat.
For those who are fans of the movie, this production will not disappoint.
You can’t fault the production for being exactly what it was – a night of theatrical romantic one-liners, innuendos, unnecessary (but very enjoyable) topless stage moments and tremendous dirty dancing.
It may be corny but the dancing, music and chemistry more than make up for it.
If this touring version of the story is often slightly shambolic in its effort to translate the film to the stage...there’s an intense sexual sweetness in the central love story, and a passion and joy in the dance sequences, that more than compensates.
Shakespeare, it ain’t. Instead it’s good, old-fashioned, escapist fun and if the ecstatic reaction of the audience is anything to go by, Dirty Dancing will continue to run and run.
