Ray Quinn stars as Don (originally played by Cliff in the film) who heads on a fun packed boys trip in a London bus visiting Paris, The Alps, Italy and Greece, in search of a good time and a brilliant summer.
This is the story of their amazing Summer Holiday adventure, which is full of fun, laughter, hit songs, and of course romance, as along the way they meet and travel around Europe with a girl band and a young American pop star who is running away from home.
This Summer Holiday musical is the happiest of all musicals. It is a feel-good show with bundles of energy and lots of laughs - it is sure to put a huge smile on your face.
A properly entertaining evening of innocent fun, pitched at a level which remembers the old days as being good but without ever indicating they would be worth going back to.
All-in-all, Summer Holiday – the Musical is a breezy, well-produced show dripping in nostalgia.
The relatively short show was extended by an encore of six songs that had the stalls on their feet in acclaim.
As song-and-dance stage adaptations of iconic film scripts go, it’s no Sunset Boulevard, but, to paraphrase Flight of the Conchords, it’s great fun if you don’t expect too much.
In the end, however, the show’s nostalgic appeal wins out.
The thing with shows such as Summer Holiday is that they’re two-dimensional, tacky, cheesy and wholesome, and we despise that we still enjoy them so much. Painting similar shades to the British summertime, Summer Holiday is all-over the place.
It’s simplistic, it’s undemanding but it’s ultimately good old-fashioned, feel-good fun.
