Daphnis and Chloe

Daphnis and Chloe

Part of the Classic Cuts Season at A Play, a Pie and a Pint

Daphnis and Chloe is the only known work of the 2nd century AD Greek novelist and romancer Longus. Read more …

It is set on the isle of Lesbos during the 2nd century AD, where the writer lived. Its style is romantic and pastoral; in Hattie Naylor’s version, the shepherd and shepherdess named in the title bring sex and 21st century human interest to this classic rural tale.

Featuring Paul James Corrigan, Mark McDonnell and Kirstin McLean.

Hattie Naylor is one of our outstanding dramatists, she lectures in the craft at Bath Spa University, and her work in theatre is already well known; she dramatised  the  hugely successful Ben Hur as a community drama, which packed the Theatre Royal  Bath  last winter, and her  dramatisation of The Nutcracker was this  Christmas’s family show at that theatre. Her first Opera premieres in April in London and a film is also in the pipeline. Hattie’s play Ivan and the Dogs premiered at Soho Theatre last year and has just been nominated for an Olivier award; it performed at the Traverse Theatre this May.

The critical consensus

A spirited, exuberantly acted and very funny – if unconventional – production.

It’s a laugh with a lot of class, and a lively grasp of the absurdity the story of two doting lovers who have no idea how to express their feelings, until the god of love intervenes.
