A Pentecostal preacher drives the narrative while the legendary gospel vocal group, The Blind Boys of Alabama, collectively play the role of Oedipus.
Classic Greek drama is given more than a little contemporary twist by New York based theatre director Lee Breuer.
He brings his seminal production to the Festival following success with the brilliantly theatrical Peter and Wendy last year and Mabou Mines DollHouse in 2007.
It's atmosphere fills the building.
No less problematic is the distancing of the story that results from Breuer's setting.
White's high notes seemed as if they were strong enough to carry the audience to heaven.
The flip side of the current trend to one-on-one theatre, this is audience-manipulating performance on an epic scale.
As a nice middle-class European white boy, I have seldom felt less qualified to pass judgement on a show. But then again judgement is not what you need here.
It is a story light on action, heavy on contemplation.
The force of the music and singing is often staggering.
A terrific success.
This 40-plus strong company is both collectively and individually breathtaking.
This show offers unadulterated joy and must surely have a life beyond Edinburgh.
