Hamlet

Bard in the Botanics present Shakespeare's classic

“Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.” Read more …

The King is dead. Long live the King! Prince Hamlet’s melancholy grief seeps into the very bones of the crumbling Danish court. The ghostly apparition of his father appears to confirm his worst fears; his duplicitous uncle has murdered his brother and taken both crown and queen for himself. Who is there that Hamlet can trust? What can a man do in the face of such terrible treachery?

Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder…?

A thrilling and tragic story, “Hamlet” is one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays. Don’t miss this exciting new outdoors production, presented for the first time by Bard in the Botanics, as part of our tenth anniversary celebrations.

The critical consensus

Paul Cunningham, dressed all in black, takes up the reins as the son out to revenge the ‘murder most foul’ of his father by newly crowned King Claudius. And a frenetic and highly watchable performance he turns in too as he switches from sanity to feigned madness, filled with the angry rage of wronged youth, rather than the actions of a broody introspective loner.

Where it matters...Jennifer Dick’s cast rise powerfully to the occasion.

Hamlet is always a timely reminder of how much Shakespeare developed the English language; it’s still often astonishing to hear so many familiar phrases in this well-known classic.
