Like Crazy (12A)

Drama, Romance

A British college student falls for an American student, only to be separated from him when she's banned from the U.S. after overstaying her visa.

The critical consensus

Like Crazy is a gruelling exercise in trying to care about a sweet but shallow couple who lack gumption and plane tickets. The performances are fine, the scenery is pretty. I just wasn’t crazy about the movie.

***(*)(*)Siobhan Synnot, The Scotsman, 22/01/2012

Realism rules in this transatlantic heartbreaker. With stellar turns, particularly from Jones, this is your Valentine’s Day date sorted.

****(*)James Mottram, Total Film, 23/01/2012

Like Crazy has much to offer; just don’t take a first date.

***(*)(*)James Mottram, The List, 24/01/2012

If drama is life with the dull bits cut out, this erroneously titled transatlantic indie romance seems intent on reinstating them in a misplaced bid for authenticity.

**(*)(*)(*)Alistair Harkness, The Scotsman, 26/01/2012

It's the terrifically natural performances of the two leads that seal the deal and keep you interested in how it all turns out.

***(*)(*)Alison Rowat, The Herald, 26/01/2012

Finely acted and partly improvised, the picture captures nicely the highs and lows of first love. It’s less fun but more truthful than a standard rom-com.

***(*)(*)Henry Fitzherbert, Daily Express, 26/01/2012

An unexpected and deeply moving tale of the fragility of young romance.

Paul Weedon, Little White Lies, 26/01/2012

Like Crazy is a reminder of the awful fact that all choices are permanent, to some degree. Life cannot be rewound and done over. It's a grownup love story.

****(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 26/01/2012

Wit, tenderness and outmanoeuvrings: that’s what we get from a film setting out, with thoughtfulness and charm, to test the chestnut that true love is impervious to time and space.

****(*)Nigel Andrews, Financial Times, 27/01/2012

I really wanted to love it, though for most of the time I liked it well enough.

***(*)(*)Anthony Quinn, The Independent, 27/01/2012

Enjoyably soppy dates.

Chris Tookey, Daily Mail, 27/01/2012

Like Crazy promotes an overpowering desire to grab Felicty Jones and Anton Yelchin's main characters by the shoulders and give them a good shake.

**(*)(*)(*)Robbie Collins, The Telegraph, 27/01/2012

Like Crazy captures the joys, terrors and fragility of young love thanks to its two stars who share some serious chemistry.

Daily Record, 27/01/2012

Like Crazy stands up as a rich, personal love story, but also as a piquant distillation of what the young go through when they leave college pumped full of hopes and fears, before deflating slowly into adult stability.

Nicholas Barber, The Independent, 29/01/2012

Likable, lightweight, bittersweet.

Philip French, The Observer, 29/01/2012

Felicity Jones shines in Drake Doremus’ deceptively simple romance, a refreshing take on an age-old dilemma.
