Transposing of mice and men, John Steinbeck’s Great Depression novella, to an equally depressing modern-day setting was a brilliant idea, but something’s lost in translation.
It’s depressing stuff, less because of the subject matter than because it represents everything that’s bad about public funded filmmaking, offering little more than a temporary handout to the cast and crew of an artistically and commercially useless proposition.
A promising cast and some good intentions are put to waste in this unconvincing Brit flick.
A tale that is never quite as gritty or as moving as it could have been.
Too stupid to be abominable, but only just.
he film is a cut above recent British low-life crime pictures.
