This is pretty straight up documentary making but for fans of McCullin and those interested in photography in general, it’s recommended viewing.
Excellent.
The documentary McCullin almost feels like a last testament as he reflects with great thoughtfulness and sensitivity on a life capturing little pieces of time and saving them for posterity.
There’s not much here that isn’t covered in his autobiography, but it’s still an absorbing portrait of a committed shutterbug who never became inured to the brutality and pathos of his images.
A terrific and fitting tribute to one of modern history's greatest eyewitnesses.
The ethics of war photography (and photography in general) are essayed in eloquent fashion in this fascinating portrait of British photo-journalist Don McCullin, whose dispatches from the front lines of some of the world’s most harrowing conflicts are responsible for shaping the way modern warfare has been captured over the last 50 years.
Directors Jacqui and David Morris have done a good, unfussy job with dynamite material.
Enjoyment hardly factors into it. This is searing, insightful, deeply upsetting stuff.
Don't miss this fine film.
While the film could have done with more in the way of talking heads (only Sir Harry Evans gets a look in), when you have as eloquent an exponent of the craft as McCullin, there is not a lot more that requires to be said.
Like his images, the film holds a quiet power and is both informative and lingeringly troubling.
