Ultimately kids will love it, so if Despicable Me 2 feels like little more than spectacular silliness, it's hard not to admire a film with such a canny grasp of what its young audience wants.
It falters in the middle and hesitates unnecessarily in setting up the love story, but Gru still has charm and kids will adore the Minions.
Despicable Me 2 should delight its Minion-like armies of small fans everywhere. Expect a long-running franchise.
