The critical consensus

Ultimately kids will love it, so if Despicable Me 2 feels like little more than spectacular silliness, it's hard not to admire a film with such a canny grasp of what its young audience wants.

It falters in the middle and hesitates unnecessarily in setting up the love story, but Gru still has charm and kids will adore the Minions.

Despicable Me 2 should delight its Minion-like armies of small fans everywhere. Expect a long-running franchise.

***(*)(*)Henry Fitzherbert, Daily Express, 27/06/2013

Nothing here to challenge anything from the Pixar golden age, but Despicable Me 2 is a sweet-natured family film.

Funnier – and perhaps cuter – than its predecessor.

Mark Kermode, The Observer, 30/06/2013

2010’s Despicable Me was a disposable piece of silliness designed to delight the younger end of the animation market, so it’s no surprise that this sequel offers more of the same.
