Frozen Ground, The (15)

Crime, Thriller

An Alaska State Trooper partners with a young woman who escaped the clutches of serial killer Robert Hansen to bring the murderer to justice. Based on actual events.

The critical consensus

With Cage as a harried cop, Cusack as a serial killer and 50 Cent as a pimp, we're assuming the casting department kicked off early on this one. Still, there's plenty in this taut thriller for you to stick around for, not least the reuniting of the Con Air duo.

***(*)(*)Kim Newman, Empire Online

A competent if unremarkable serial killer thriller.

***(*)(*)Alistair Harkness, The Scotsman, 20/07/2013

It’s very thorough in its depiction of Alaska’s strip bars, but apparently not nearly as interested in character or psychology.

**(*)(*)(*)Siobhan Synnot, The Scotsman, 21/07/2013

It doesn’t break new ground but is tense, atmospheric and creepy.

***(*)(*)Henry Fitzherbert, Daily Express, 17/07/2013

There is some good Prime Suspect-like tension here, with a neat cat-and-mouse psychological gamble with a certain piece of jewellery – and solid performances from Hudgens, Cage and Cusack.

***(*)(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 18/07/2013

Walker never attempts to make it look like fun, and Anchorage at night resembles an anteroom of hell.

Philip French, The Observer, 21/07/2013

The film operates without fear of the commonplace: the script is by-the-numbers, too.

**(*)(*)(*)Anthony Quinn, The Independent, 18/07/2013

The Frozen Ground delivers a few chills and a little excitement but it doesn't quite earn its classification as a thriller.
