Leviathan (15)

Drama

In a Russian coastal town, Dmitri is forced to fight the corrupt mayor when he is told that his house will be demolished. He recruits a lawyer friend to help, but the man's arrival brings further misfortune for Dmitri and his family.

The critical consensus

Frustrating, funny at points, heartbreaking and quite magnificently shot throughout, Leviathan is one of the films of the year.

*****Phil de Semlyen, Empire Online, 03/11/2014

Brimming with emotion, unflinchingly tense, and often darkly, painfully funny, this is a film possessed of both classic sweep and sharp contemporary relevance.

*****Hannah McGill, The List, 04/11/2014

The cold beauty of setting and themes leave a lasting wonder.

****(*)Sophie Monks Kaufman, Little White Lies, 06/11/2014

In its bleak way the film is beautiful, full of wintry landscapes and poetic shots of the huge whalebones that lie discarded on the shore.

Geoffrey MacNab, The Independent, 06/11/2014

Stunningly shot and superbly acted, especially by Madyanov, this is film-making on a grand scale.

*****Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 06/11/2014

Verdict: Powerful Russian drama

****(*)Brian Viner, Daily Mail, 07/11/2014

A haunting comment on the diminished power of the people in Putin’s Russia.

****(*)Alistair Harkness, The Scotsman, 08/11/2014

The pitiless way Zvyagintsev metes out punishments to all is savage.

***(*)(*)Siobhan Synnot, The Scotsman, 09/11/2014

It’s visceral, rebellious fare.

****(*)Mark Kermode, The Observer, 09/11/2014
