Capernaum (15)

Drama

Arabic language drama, set in Lebanon, in which a boy sues his parents for neglect.

The critical consensus

With two astonishing child performances, Capernaum is a real heart-breaker. It can make Ken Loach look happy-go-lucky but it’s a gripping, sympathetic cry for the dispossessed.

****(*)Ian Freer, Empire Online, 18/02/2019

Captivating Lebanese drama following a resourceful and determined boy on the streets of Beirut.

*****Allan Hunter, The List, 18/02/2019

A very poor man’s Bicycle Thieves. Oh, the humanity!

**(*)(*)(*)David Jenkins, Little White Lies, 19/02/2019

In Nadine Labaki’s powerful drama, a Beirut child sues his parents for giving birth to him – before ending up on the street caring for a stranger’s baby.

****(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 20/02/2019

Though it over-eggs some aspects (and makes questionable use of a toddler in one of the subplots), it feels true to the heightened perspective of its protagonist.

***(*)(*)Alistair Harkness, The Scotsman, 21/02/2019

The storytelling has a humour, lyricism and zest that belies the grimness of the subject matter.
