Late Night (15)

Drama, Comedy

US comedy drama in which a television talkshow hires a new comedy writer to rescue its pioneering female host from falling ratings.

The critical consensus

Late Night is sharply written and warmly enjoyable, with Kaling and Thompson on endearing form. But a few extra knock-out gags and a clearer focus would really help it in the ratings.

***(*)(*)Ben Travis, Empire Online, 03/06/2019

Mindy Kaling stirs up the stale, male writing team behind Emma Thompson’s talk show in this warm and witty comedy.

****(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 05/06/2019

A caustic satirical comedy that turns into an unlikely tearjerker.

****(*)Geoffrey Macnab, The Independent, 06/06/2019

Thompson excels in an otherwise forgettable comedy.

***(*)(*)Hannah Woodhead, Little White Lies, 06/06/2019

A comedy about an Indian-American woman hired to write for a TV talkshow is likable but lacks real punch.
