Wayne McGregor’s dynamic style and ground-breaking collaborative approach across dance, film, music, visual art, technology and science has seen him create a string of truly unique, interdisciplinary work over the years. His latest work FAR is no exception.
Danced by an ensemble of ten incredible performers and the finest exponents of McGregor's singular style, FAR is set to a new, haunting score by the critically-acclaimed composer Ben Frost.
A prolific dance maker, and the first Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet to come from contemporary dance, in the past year alone Wayne McGregor has delivered world premieres for New York City Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet and The Royal Opera. He has choreographed movies (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) and created sets for Glastonbury. In January 2011, McGregor was awarded a CBE in the New Year Honours List. In 2013, he makes his debut with Bolshoi Ballet, with a new Rite Of Spring.
It’s a profound, affecting conclusion to a lava flow of inspired movement that resonates with recognisable humanity, even if rarefied science was on its mind.
The forty-five minutes that do work are intensely gripping. The choreography and subject matter blend perfectly and McGregor’s willingness to experiment, not least by testing the limits of his dancers’ bodies has, for the most part, created an unforgettable and enlightening production.
McGregor's choreography isn't for everyone; there were few rounded edges and there was a distinct lack of prettiness. Instead he gave his dancers compelling, unexpected movement which pushed their bodies, and our minds, to fascinating new places.
