Universal Arts--Fringe 2012

This Olympic year is both interesting and challenging. Read more …

We are proud to be involved in the celebration of culture taking place in the shadow of sport. Endorsed by the Cultural Olympiad and in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, Universal Arts presents a programme of dazzling outdoor theatre from Poland in the Old College Quad. We bring back world-renowned Teatr Biuro Podróży with Macbeth - Who is That Bloodied Man, plus their new spectacle Planet Lem, based on the works of Stanislaw Lem, (Solaris – Tarkovsky and Soderberg).

In addition, there’s a very special one-off performance of Podróży’s award-winning Carmen Funebre in aid of Amnesty International. The KTO theatre from Krakow bring their epic production of the Blind based on a book by Jose Saramago.

We are also delighted to be back in Hill Street Theatre; its 38th year as a Festival Fringe venue. In addition to our usual focus on established Scottish and international companies, including the celebrated Northern Ireland actor Dan Gordon, Scottish theatre companies Objektiv and Strange Town, we are working in partnership with exceptional and inspiring young professionals from Hinge Productions to enhance the Hill Street experience.  They are chosen partners in a new initiative that aims to develop the next generation of venue producers and managers. Universal Hinge is the start of a three-year programme that includes budgeting, programming, creating and running temporary festival venues. The programme also includes workshops and talks about the benefits and challenges of domestic and international touring – open to all who are interested.

Additionally we are going to run other workshops for theatre practitioners by British and international professionals.  For the latest details please check back here at the website.

More information on this production is available at universalartsfestival.com.
