World-renowned director Sir David McVicar is joined by the design team behind War Horse, Rae Smith and Paule Constable, as he directs Debussy’s extraordinary opera. Inspired by the paintings of Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi, their production brings to life an enigmatic tale of love, honour, jealousy and loss, of things half-expressed and lives half-lived.
Sir David McVicar's tour de force production.
The interplay between the voices and the orchestra, conducted by Stuart Stratford, is accomplished with seamless grace.
There was real delight among the audience on leaving the Festival Theatre.
Debussy’s beautiful, assiduously illustrative score (which matches the action emotion for emotion) is enhanced by fine performances across the piece.
It isn’t a barrel of laughs, it is long and slow to develop, but in the end it is musically rewarding.
