Written by award winning writer Tim Firth, The Band is a beautiful story for anyone who grew up with a boyband and how those songs became the soundtrack to their lives. Read more …
For five 16 year old girls in 1992, the band is everything. 25 years on, we are reunited with this group of friends as they try once more to fulfil their dream of meeting their heroes.
Featuring the music of Take That, Britain’s most successful boyband of all time, whose songs include Never Forget, Back For Good, A Million Love Songs, Greatest Day, The Flood, Relight My Fire, Shine & Rule the World and starring the winners from the BBC’s Let it Shine, Five to Five.
I am sure The Band will be a satisfying night’s entertainment, a piece of pure escapism and nostalgia for many and it may fulfil its brief as ‘a love letter to the fans’, but for this audience member, there are more feelings of disappointment than delight.
The Band is a rollercoaster ride of nostalgia and utter joy.
The Band is the perfect tribute to anyone who grew up in the 90s reading Smash Hits and watching Top of the Pops every week – a beautiful, tear-jerking show that’s the best new musical to hit theatres in years.
It is timeless, surprisingly emotional and just a whole a lot of fun. Like the musical and the music of Take That promotes, “This is the life we’ve been given, let it shine.”
The Band emerges as a hugely effective exercise in musical and cultural memory, limited in ambition, but just about perfect in achieving its own aims.
