Music Review: Lonelady--Hinterland (Warp Records) ****

Lorna Irvine reviews 'a solid, satisfying follow-up'.

The long-awaited second album from Julie Anne Campbell is a sleek, hooky piece of monochromatic funk pop.

She has listed Arthur Russell and Prince among her influences, but the distorted synth breakdown in ‘Into The Cave’ suggests post-punk like Cabaret Voltaire.

The all-conquering 'Groove It Out' with its “na na na na na" refrain is irresistible, 'Flee!' is already a live favourite and 'Bunkerpop' judders with bass.

Expect greatness. This is a solid, satisfying follow-up which gets richer with every listen.

Hinterland is out now on Warp.
