Theatre Review: Most Favoured

Lorna Irvine is amused by this 'lightweight' comedy.

David Ireland’s cheeky little play for Oran Mor and the Traverse may be little more than an extended sketch, but it is fun with a few nice one-liners.

Glaswegian Mary (Gabriel Quigley) and American Mike (Richard Rankin) wake from a one-night stand in a cheap hotel room during the Edinburgh Festival. Neurotic Mary is absolutely elated, having had the best sex she has ever experienced, describing it as ‘’the closest thing to love I’ve ever known’’. Mike, meanwhile, can’t get enough of his bucket of KFC.

So far, so gender stereotyped. However, the twist here is that Mike is an angel, sent from God to impregnate the increasingly broody Mary. Possibly. Understandably, no-nonsense atheist Mary is less than impressed, and the pair bicker until the final scene.

The device of making handsome, alleged celestial being Mike a tactless slob is amusing but lightweight. Both actors do a great job, playing out the farce of their situation with energy and broad strokes, although Rankin’s accent does wander a little.

Like Mike’s fried chicken breakfast, there’s little here of nutritional value, but you can enjoy this as a mid-day snack, and it won’t repeat on you.
