Film follows the cool, emotionless Erica, who dives into bed with any man she meets. When she is offered a job in a DIY store in Austin, she discovers the kindness of strangers, but also the gruesome shadowy side of it.
Red, White & Blue is a very serious attempt to strip away the cliché that surrounds horror/thriller staples – like the black widow female and avenging angel – to create a different dialogue. It’s not pleasant or easy to watch but Red, White & Blue is grimly progressive.
Not a horror film, but an undeniably horrifying one, it depicts believable characters in credibly desperate situations, with none of the usual genre comforts on hand to halt the path to damnation.
Simon Rumley, who’s been making features for ten years, manages a shocking and provocative first half here, before veering into brutal revenge-torture for a shocking and merely excessive second one.
Unexpected plot twists keep you guessing – it’s dark, twisted and ultra-violent...a must-see for fans of Americana and new British film-makers alike.
The three leads are superb, Fuller in particular conveying a spiritual damage that has no outlet other than casual sex.
It is a tragic story of some power with echoes of Hubert Selby Jr's novel Last Exit to Brooklyn.
