Tamara Drew is easy on the eye and an undemanding, frothy watch - but it's a weird choice for acclaimed director Stephen Frears.
A lightweight but jolly romp.
Overwrought comic drama is really rather irritating
Frears and Simmonds have generous and understanding hearts and there is no malice in their humour nor in the people they quietly satirise.
There is the taste of a McVitie's Boaster laced with mephedrone.
At one point, not even another of Mr Frears’s dreamy shots of the English countryside can stave off the yawns.
Even with the safety-net of all those great illustrations it could have missed its mark. Lucky for us it didn't.
Only recommended if you are starting to miss Last of the Summer Wine.
If you have ever wondered what The Archers on Viagra would look like, this may be your cup of afternoon tea.
The cinematic equivalent of dad dancing at a wedding.
Frears, helped in no small measure by Moira Buffini’s droll script, orchestrates the soap-opera theatrics with relish.
