Kelly and Victor meet at a nightclub and start a sexual relationship, the excitement of which removes them from the dull ordinariness of their lives.
The sense of damaged souls passing on their pain is hinted at, but the lack of depth renders the results deadening.
A very well shot and well acted drama.
Adapted from a novel by Niall Griffiths, this story of a destructive amour fou is undermined by a double casting flaw.
At times the anguish slips into overstatement, with the petite mort of auto-asphyxiation becoming more practical than metaphorical. But it's passionately played throughout, and clearly wrenched from the gut.
Using his Liverpool locations well, Evans has a feel for mood, but it’d be wrong to mistake atmosphere for psychological depth; Kelly + Victor could’ve been so much more than what it ultimately achieves.
