Things To Come (12A)

Drama

A philosophy teacher soldiers through the death of her mother, getting fired from her job, and dealing with a husband who is cheating on her.

The critical consensus

As a filmmaker, Mia Hansen-Løve just keeps getting better and better and Things to Come marks her out as one of the most talented and exciting directors working today.

*****Katherine McLaughlin, The List, 30/08/2016

Almost as annoyingly pretentious as it sounds, but it’s also saved somewhat by Huppert’s prickly performance.

***(*)(*)Alistair Harkness, The Scotsman, 01/09/2016

Another stunner, though not quite up there with all her other stunners.

****(*)David Jenkins, Little White Lies

The heady brew of bloodshed, sex trafficking and vengeance is served up with the heaviest of hands while the comic elements fall flat and the dialogue leaves you bewildered.

***(*)(*)Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 02/09/2016

Huppert’s warm, wry performance as an academic facing a crisis at home powers Mia Hansen-Løve’s intimate, intellectual film.

****(*)Mark Kermode, The Observer, 04/09/2016
