Your Name offers audiences intellect, wonder and tears in equal measure.
Prepare to be spirited away. A brain-scrambler to make hearts swell, Shinkai’s giddy romance brims with emotion and invention.
The animation here is often beautiful and the film is dealing with dark and profound issues.
Though a smash in Japan, Makoto Shinkai’s animation about two youngsters who swap bodies loses momentum – he’s not up to Miyazaki’s standard yet.
It’s much deeper and darker than its bright, breezy, montage-heavy first half suggests.
The film soon blossoms from a body-swap comedy into something magical and profound.
At least it’s ambitious, even if it doesn’t quite nail it on the cogent entertainment front.
Part body-swap comedy, part long-distance romance, part... something else. If you only see one Japanese animated feature this year, see this one, and see it more than once.
With this dazzling body-swap romance, Makoto Shinkai confirms his reputation as Japan’s new animation king.
