Killing of a Sacred Deer, The (15)

Drama, Horror, Mystery

Steven, a charismatic surgeon, is forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart, when the behavior of a teenage boy he has taken under his wing turns sinister.

The critical consensus

Working as a profound meditation on karma, predestination and guilt and a proper scary movie, this is near career-best work from all involved. Be warned: this is tough stuff.

*****Andrew Lowry, Empire Online, 30/10/2017

A step yet further into the deadpan weird from Yorgos Lanthimos. Disturbing and often distressing, but compulsively watchable.

****(*)Philip Kemp, Total Film, 30/10/2017

Starts off ominously unsettling, before an out-of-nowhere twist leaves us totally adrift in a sea of anxiety.

****(*)Trevor Johnston, Little White Lies, 01/11/2017

Yorgos Lanthimos’s surrealistic revenge tragedy is all the more chilling because of its absurdist and macabre humour.

****(*)Geoffrey Macnab, The Independent, 02/11/2017

Darkly comic and disturbing, it boasts some impressive performances.

****(*)Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 03/11/2017

Brilliant central performances from Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell feed the inexorable rise of dread.

****(*)Alistair Harkness, The Scotsman, 02/11/2017

Deadpan humour meets full-blooded horror in Yorgos Lanthimos’s unsettling drama about a surgeon’s friendship with a teenage boy.

****(*)Mark Kermode, The Observer, 05/11/2017
