An animated fantasy film in which a young girl is transported to a land of magic after discovering a rare flower.
Yonebayashi pays perfect tribute to Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli with this bewitching and visually dazzling adventure. Studio Ponoc is off to a flying start.
Mary And The Witch’s Flower may not break new ground but it’s an impressive affair.
The fantasy surroundings are more fully realised than the characters, though it’s all rooted in classic children’s literature.
The film has charm as well as a certain deja vu for audiences, although for me it didn’t quite have the distinction of Marnie.
