Princess Aurora is born into a magical world where mortals mix with the fairies of the enchanted forest at the royal baby’s christening. A jealous fairy fallen from grace casts a curse which means that Aurora will, on her 16th birthday, prick her finger and die, and while The Lilac Fairy saves the innocent child by softening the curse, Aurora falls into an enchanted hundred-year slumber from which she can only be woken by the kiss of her true love.
Featuring breathtaking choreography, lavish sets and costumes and Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score, performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra, The Sleeping Beauty will be bringing a little magic to the winter months – let Scottish Ballet cast a spell on you!
Enchantment dances everywhere you look in this welcome return of Ashley Page's outstanding re-imagining of Sleeping Beauty for Scottish Ballet.
The dancers are as captivating and dynamic, both singly and together, as they were four years ago.
This Beauty is by far the strongest of Page’s updated classics for Scottish Ballet, with more warmth and sharper invention.
Whatever cast is listed, the standards maintained in this Sleeping Beauty are as fully five-star as those set on the first night.
Sleeping Beauty is opulence itself.
Bringing a meditative quality to the classic work, choreographer Ashley Page has focussed on melding a number of different tellings of the work into one evolving piece.
It’s a story of missed opportunites mixed with some wonderful moments but it’s unlikely to win this ballet any new fans.
While Scottish Ballet’s narrative winter season productions now almost seem as traditional as the Christmas pantomime, Ashley Page’s masterful choreography makes sure that nothing feels at all monotonous.
Page may 'approach things at a different angle', but it's too often to the detriment of consistency and depth.
