Russian-Dutch soprano Gulnara Shafigullina, recently Violetta at the Mariinsky, and Anush Hovhannisyan, representing Armenia at Cardiff Singer of the World 2017, head a cast of international talent also including multi-award-winning Dutch tenor Peter Gijsbertsen and British baritone Stephen Gadd (Le Villi2017). David Parry (Carmen 2016) conducts.
It’s a hugely involving production that propels you along with sheer emotion, and the Scottish Opera Orchestra is on broad and resonant form under conductor David Parry.
A brilliant revival of David McVicar’s 2008 production, this Scottish Opera staging by Marie Lambert takes us to the very heart of the opulent and cynical society soirees of Paris in the mid-1800s. Splendidly costumed, set and lit (by Tanya McCallin, design, and Stephen Powles, lighting), with vivid colour swallowed by dominant black, the piece looks and feels like a living premonition.
This is the opera to see for those not normally opera buffs. It was really good and easy to recommend.
