Inspired by the story of a refugee who was stranded for years in Paris Charles de Gaulle, Flight tells the tale of a group of total strangers stuck in an airport during an electrical storm. Thrown together, their lives and relationships soon start to unravel but then some surprising alliances are formed, and some unexpected discoveries made.
The impressively grand score, with its appropriately soaring crescendos and moments of spiky discordance, is matched by fine singing across the board.
Flight is a disturbing piece of magical realist storytelling with clever lyrics and a complex score that will stand the test of being heard over and over again. To quote the lady who smiled at me as she prepared to go out and face the near-Siberian weather of the night outside – masterful.
Nimble, beautifully detailed.
