Truant

How do you find your limits without breaking the rules? Teenagers need to play truant from their parents to establish their own identity, their own personal values. But what happens when parents play truant from their children, when they avoid their parental duties? Everyone has family, but who is making and who is breaking the rules? Read more …

Truant is a provocative new piece of theatre set in, and inspired by, the people of Glasgow. Truant is the result of interviews with a diverse range of people from communities across the city exploring responses to questions about family values, the challenges of modern parenting and the place of children in society.

Featuring a cast of eight and combining performance, movement, music and live debate, Truant is an unmissable event. You can follow the debates after each performance on our Facebook page.

As Truant contains strong language, an age guide of 14+ is suggested.

The critical consensus

Much of the writing is mundane, but there are also frequent moments of insight. Crucially, it is not over until the nightly audience discussion, expertly chaired by Mari Binnie, during which the contradictions of the fragmented scenes fuel an illuminating inter-generational discussion that you wouldn't want to bunk off from.

The play’s compactness is just right for the current tour of community centres and church halls. While it’s not always clear which age-group the play is aimed at, it never patronises.

All of this is performed with terrific flair and commitment by Retallack’s cast.
