Stef Smith: The Silence of Bees

Part of Behaviour 2012

Lush opens its doors for a poetic and intimate site-specific show from award-winning writer and director Stef Smith. Read more …

Separated by time, and joined by business, blood and beekeeping, three women unfold their story, moving through decades of unspoken words, secret lives and memories they can’t quite seem to forget.

Currently writer-on-attachment with the National Theatre of Scotland, Stef created the text for the multi-award winning Roadkill as well as sell-out show Falling/Flying and BBC radio drama Tea and Symmetry.

The critical consensus

Features three fine performances...the shape of the play, though, sometimes seems a little tame.

***(*)(*)Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman, 13/04/2012

The strong cast and Smith’s script, which convincingly evokes inter-generational tension and the suffering caused by lack of communication in families, deserves a slightly more dynamic production.

***(*)(*)Allan Radcliffe, The List, 13/04/2012

It's not a hectically histrionic script, but an outstanding cast infuse it with a telling sincerity that reproaches passivity and complacency.
