This unmissable story features crocodiles, lost boys, pirates and fairies! So take the second star on the right and straight on till morning.
It is clear the show is in its infancy and will no doubt tighten as the cast and crew continue their run. However, the headline names failed to deliver a production of the quality that its reputation suggests and as such, Peter Pan may be banished to Neverland without too much protest.
The thought that has gone into adding new elements while staying in the tradition is crystallised in the welcome return of the old-fashioned songsheet, which uses modern technology to increase the potential for audience embarrassment. Added to this, you have the customary topical references, rewritten songs, cheesy jokes and double entendres – all performed with relish – audience participation, pyrotechnics, a pantomime dog, plenty of flying and a genuinely scary effect. All these combine successfully to create a great night out for all ages.
There’s plenty of laughter here, and a welcome return to a traditional final song-sheet. But panto is an art-form built around storytelling; and when that fails, no amount of laughter and spectacle can entirely save a show that has lost some of its heart, and almost all of its soul.
The result is a balanced production, with Stott given room to perform while Gray’s stellar comic abilities are brought to the fore.
Peter Pan the Pantomime is bright and boisterous, with colourful costumes, song and dance, fun and laughter – but the essential emotional heart of Barrie’s classic play has been sadly lost in translation.
Even with its flaws, Peter Pan is traditional panto with state-of the art contemporary twists and some genuinely funny jokes, remember though, it’s Hook that deserves booed, not Peter and Tink!
People of all ages danced out of the theatre after this charming and must-see spectacular. Make sure you hook yourself a seat!
Pacy, confident and very funny.
