But, as passions and prejudices are revealed, is singing enough to keep this diverse group from falling apart?
As the first fruits of a partnership between the Citz and commercial producers Ambassadors Theatre Group, Dominic Hill's production navigates his cast towards a feelgood ending care of David Higham's rousing musical arrangements.
Director Dominic Hill weaves a play with real Glasgow humour, most of it from the rough-around-the-edges Scott, and a heartfelt and convincing reminder that music can bridge the gaps between us.
On the whole it is a thoroughly engaging and utterly irresistible evening’s theatre.
Although the script and acting...strike an occasional bum not...there are terrific leading performances.
Paul Higgins and Ricky Ross’s musical on a theme of absolution, reconciliation and redemption is uneven but carried by its rousing expression of communal enterprise.
The sense of belonging, and gorgeous harmonies throughout, make for an energetic, if uneven, production.
Predictable it may be but this feel-good show is so lovingly staged and performed it isn’t hard to imagine The Choir enjoying a longer life than this initial run.
The opening night standing ovation was testament to the superb choral performances of the ensemble, but one has doubts as to whether The Choir has what it takes to become an enduring work of musical theatre.
