Are there far, far better things out there? Undoubtedly. But if you’re in the mood for an enthusiastic staging of a well-loved tale, and don’t mind a production that runs towards overwrought, enjoy.
While Dickens buffs may miss some necessary omissions, the edited action captures a real sense of urgency – from the rough and tumble of its chosen opening dialogue in the courtroom scene, right up to the high drama of its conclusion.
The story is guttural and heart-wrenching; the play, elegant and faithful. The cast are so gloriously authentic that they will speak Dickens’ words into your very soul.
