Featuring two of the most iconic lovers in all of history and staged in the magnificent surroundings of the Kibble Palace, Shakespeare’s epic romance returns to Bard in the Botanics for the first time in fifteen years.
This tension is brilliantly evoked in the performances of the leads, Nicole Cooper and Andy Clark, whose characters appear magnetically drawn to each other, almost in spite of their own misgivings.
With director Gordon Barr’s adaptation stripped down to accommodate a cast of eight, such a relatively minimal approach allows the political ramifications of the central romance to breathe unencumbered by assorted entourages.
Barr’s nine-strong company deliver an Antony and Cleopatra to remember, a little short of pace in its final scenes, but full of rich and sensual images that truly brand themselves on the mind.
Compelling.
