Jo Turbitt reviews a piece that has 'lots of interesting ideas' that 'are not fully explored or utilised'.
As it stands, We Are Monchichi is a fun portfolio with pockets of ideas, concepts and textual/ physical explorations of how we are constructed of multiple ideas: of ourselves, of others and a variety of perspectives/observations and assumptions that we, the human race, make--whether conscious or unconsciously.
There are seeds of ideas here that, with further direction and time, could form meatier chunks. The performers technical ability and investment is very evident, and overall their partnership offers a friendly, playful tone to the piece.
Often, however, there is a misconnect within the duet work and moments in the space where the two genres of dance/personality don’t quite combine, even within the intentional juxtapositions. Visually there are lots of interesting ideas that present themselves but then are not fully explored or utilised.
I’d be really interested to see the next evolution of the work as it certainly offers interesting physical ideas.
We Are Monchichi was part of this year's Edinburgh International Festival. Its run has ended.
