A burglar falls for an heiress as she dies in his arms. When he learns that he has the gift of reincarnation, he sets out to save her.
Goldsman’s tale is a mawkish stinker.
Corny and shakily plotted, it's a disappointing directorial debut from Goldsman.
Verdict: Slushy nonsense.
The images of a snow-covered Manhattan are lovely and Farrell and Jessica Brown Findlay work wonders in giving heart and soul to the true love that binds their characters throughout eternity. It’s just everything else makes this a messy, unwieldy affair.
The only way this film could be made worse would be to be eaten by a badger while watching it.
Misguided folly.
Unfortunately, the film's magical- realist approach comes off as kitsch and preposterous.
Largely horrible. But we would go back.
David Jenkins & Adam Lee Davies, Little White Lies, 20/02/2014
A genuinely baffling genre mishmash that mistakes shambolic plotting for ingenuity and cloying sentimentality for emotional truth, A New York Winter’s Tale is too earnest to hate, but too misconceived to respect.
The overall result is a film that falls short on just about every level, lacking the spectacle to keep you dazzled or the emotional pull to keep you gripped. And while some moments may be unintentionally amusing, any sniggers will eventually turn to jeers.
