Night Before, The

Comedy

On Christmas eve, three lifelong friends, two of whom are Jewish, spend the night in New York City looking for the Holy Grail of Christmas parties.

The critical consensus

While never a classic in the manner of the Christmas movies it references, The Night Before cheerfully rehashes Superbad’s freewheeling bonhomie to provide both crude silliness and predictable bromance in holiday-season-sized portions.

It doesn’t all land, but The Night Before is largely a salty, sweet jingle ball.

***(*)(*)Ian Freer, Empire Online, 01/12/2015

Even Michael Shannon’s entertaining cameo can’t save this festive season comedy from mediocrity.

**(*)(*)(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 03/12/2015

Just as gloopy as any seasonal movie.

**(*)(*)(*)Geoffrey MacNab, The Independent, 03/12/2015

Body fluids, bromance and bad taste jokes dominate before the film decides to go all warm and fuzzy on us.

***(*)(*)Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 04/12/2015

If buddy movies are your thing but Christmas flicks aren't, you'll enjoy this refreshingly edgy romp about three friends lost in the city full of hallucinogens and regrets.

****(*)Ken McIntyre, Total Film, 02/12/2015

Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and friends can’t raise this token seasonal offering from the doldrums.

*(*)(*)(*)(*)Mark Kermode, The Observer, 06/12/2015

The three leads have an infectious rapport and the film doesn’t fall into the trap of being clearly more fun for the cast than the audience.
