The critical consensus

Crucial for serious fans of Lynch, even if it may baffle newcomers. Since pretty much the only thing more interesting to lovers of his work is the enigmatic man behind it, there’s a lot for them to get their teeth into here.

****(*)Andrew Lowry, Empire Online, 11/07/2017

Although intriguing, it is perhaps one for Lynch completists only.

***(*)(*)Angie Errigo, The List, 10/07/2017

A documentary that mimics the oblique quality of Lynch’s own work.

****(*)Anton Bitel, Little White Lies, 11/07/2017

A fascinating, very intimate portrait of the artist and filmmaker in which we hear Lynch talk through key formative moments his life in stream of consciousness fashion.

****(*)Geoffrey Macnab, The Independent, 12/07/2017

You might feel the same faced with the disturbing imagery in his work but if you want to understand the mind behind Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet then David Lynch: The Art Life is probably essential.

****(*)Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 14/07/2017

This film underscores his utter uniqueness.

****(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 14/07/2017

The maverick film director’s life story is less intriguing than his oeuvre might suggest.

**(*)(*)(*)Simran Hans, The Observer, 16/07/2017

Intriguing and illuminating.
