Now, Theatre Royal Brighton Productions brings this exhilarating piece to a new national audience in a fresh production created by Artistic Director Christopher Luscombe (The Madness of George III, Dandy Dick and Spamalot in the West End) and starring Robert Bathurst (Downton Abbey, Wild at Heart, Cold Feet).
Blue/Orange is the electrifying story of Christopher (Oliver Wilson), who believes that a notorious military dictator is his father. In the battle of wills his psychiatrist Robert (Robert Bathurst) plans to thrust him back into the community, but a young doctor (Gerard McCarthy) thinks this is too soon. A compelling and witty battle of freedom and ambition unfolds.
Luscombe’s three actors Robert Bathurst, Gerard McCarthy and Oliver Wilson, inheriting roles originated by Bill Nighy, Andrew Lincoln and Chiwetel Ejiofor respectively, both inhabit and interrogate the roles (and each other) with a thoughtful, shape-shifting intensity that keeps them on their toes, and the audience on the back foot as well.
The issues [the play] wrestles with are so essential and intractable that it gives your mind a health-giving workout at every viewing.
Played out against the clean lines of Colin Falconer's set, the pacy production, directed by Christopher Luscombe benefits from three fine central performances.
