Arthur Conan Doyle Appreciation Society, The--Traverse, Edinburgh

Just because you don't believe in ghosts, Holmes, doesn't mean they don't exist. Read more …

Who, really, was the man behind Sherlock Holmes?

This December, we are gathering for a very special presentation about Arthur Conan Doyle - one of Edinburgh's most famous authors, from the experts.

Well they are meant to be experts, but the highland tour has been a disaster and now strange things are happening at the Traverse.

The Arthur Conan Doyle Appreciation Society  is a riotous comedy that hurtles from particle physics to fairies and the supernatural. Expect something truly different at the Traverse this Christmas.

The critical consensus

Behind the comedy this has something deeper to say about one of Edinburgh’s most famous sons. And it has a grand time saying it.

Thom Dibdin, The Stage, 07/12/2012

Thoroughly entertaining.

****(*)Irene Brown, Edinburgh Guide, 08/12/2012

This premise is enough to build a story filled with contradictions and comedy, leaving you with more than a little appreciation for Mr Conan- Doyle.

****(*)Thom Louis, The Scotsman, 10/12/2012

Director Orla O’Loughlin and the Traverse team can congratulate themselves on a light-touch but beautifully-crafted Christmas show, with a memorable leading performance, and the kind of audience-appeal that is hard to resist.

****(*)Joyce McMillan, 08/12/2012

Peepolykus have cooked a feast of brain food that will provoke thought and discussion long after the curtain call.

****(*)Emma Hay, TVBomb, 14/12/2012

This show is at its best – a hilarious, quirky, jubilant best – when the fun train is allowed to run full steam ahead without any pesky questions about deeper meaning.

***(*)(*)Suzanne Black, The List, 17/12/2012

At times, it is very funny, but at other times, only mildly amusing, meaning the show never quite finds the level of comic delirium – or post-Enlightenment debate – to make it compelling.

***(*)(*)Mark Fisher, The Guardian, 19/12/2012

Beautifully designed by Anthony Lamble and others and staged with occasionally overwhelming energy and imagination, the seemingly knockabout romp by its end pulls together some thoughtful and delicate observations about humanity’s desire to come to terms with mortality and the artist’s need to live on through their work.

****(*)David Pollock, The Independent, 21/12/2012
