Bringing to life the dynamic, larger-than-life persona of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Peron, Evita tells the story from her young and ambitious beginnings to the enormous wealth and power she gained and her ultimate rise to sainthood.
It’s not often that a London audience springs to its feet in unison, but the prolonged standing ovation was thoroughly deserved and indicative of what a hit this breathtaking touring production is likely to be.
All in all, it was a great evening’s entertainment, and the minor disappointment felt when some of the party pieces didn’t quite come off was outweighed by some unexpectedly powerful portions. Given the amount of baggage that comes with this show, they mostly gave the impression of travelling pretty light.
This well-established but beautifully-staged production.
This might not be the best interpretation of Evita to tour to the Playhouse nor, indeed, the most nuanced interpretation to play in the capital, but it is a bright piece of musical entertainment.
