The lack of a credible story robs the panto of some of its magic, in other words; but not of the rollicking mood of celebration that Perth audiences both demand and relish, right to the final curtain.
The story may not entirely hang together, and some of the scenes feel a little stiff and under-rehearsed, but there are compensations in the musical numbers, choreographed by Lynne Bustard, with fine support from an energetic young company.
Ian Grieve directs top dame Barrie Hunter and a superb cast in a fabulously crazy production.
Ian Grieve’s direction ramps up the bawdiness, and even if the plot gets buried in a Moroccan misstep during the second half, more reminiscent of Aladdin, it’s a fun ride for all.
Alan McHugh’s adaptation is full of fun, lots of local jokes, banter and the opportunity for Barrie Hunter’s dame to put his first-class stamp on the production.
